Week 4 Learning Goals
Analyze a Biological System to Identify and Evaluate a Problem
Week 4 Overview
Learning Objectives
Students will use the T chart method to analyze the appropriateness of inspiration from their chosen organism and specify requirements for the problem they have chosen. Students will discuss the major challenges when trying to match biology to a problem. Students may take up to 2 days for this activity.
Before the Lesson
Explain 40 min (Group Work)

Students will use the T chart method to analyze the appropriateness of inspiration from their chosen organism and specify requirements for the problem they have chosen.

Remind students that if the bio understanding was misguided, they will need to go back and find a better bio match: it can be a better problem the system can address OR a different bio analogue.

Review slides if needed: 2.1.5. Evaluate the Analogy using T-Chart Slides

  • Review Identifying the Problem.
  • Review 4-Box Method for Problem Specification.
  • Discuss using the T-chart to compare the design problem with the biological analogue.
  • Discuss the comparison of the Design Problem with the Biological Analogue
  • Is Biological Analogy a good fit for the Design Problem?
    • Think about Scale
    • Compare functions
    • Compare environment
